Game model – practical implementation

Every coach has an idea of how they want their team to play. The challenge is turning that idea into a clear, simple and practical Game Model. This course presents an approach to building a Game Model based on clear principles, logical connections and behaviours that can be transferred directly into training and competition. The course focuses on for phases in the game, showing how Macro Principles can be broken down into Sub-Principles and then developed through training. The aim is not to make football more complicated, but to create a model that is simple enough for players to understand while being detailed enough to cover most situations they will face. The model presented in this course has also been used at a professional level.

What you'll learn

  • How to build a simple and coherent Game Model.
  • How to create Macro Principles that can work regardless of the team's formation.
  • How to break Macro Principles down into logical Sub-Principles.
  • How to make principles simple and understandable for players.
  • How to build a clear attacking Game Model.
  • How to build a clear defending Game Model
  • How to connect Game Model principles with training design.
  • How to balance your own Game Model with adaptation to the opponent.
  • How to prepare for the chaos of transitions and unpredictable moments of the game.

Requirements

  • This course is for football coaches who want to improve the way they think about and build their Game Model.
  • It is suitable for coaches working at different levels, from developing coaches to coaches working in professional football.
  • You do not need a finished Game Model before starting the course. The course is designed to give you a practical framework that you can use to start building or improve your own model.
  • The most important requirement is an open mind and a willingness to question whether we really need to make football more complicated than it is.

About this course

The course starts with a simple question: What kind of team do we want to be?

From there, we build a Game Model based on clear Macro Principles and show how these principles can be developed into more specific Sub-Principles and behaviours.

The attacking part of the course focuses on creating a logical sequence of behaviours, where the principles support each other rather than contradict one another.

The defending part follows the same approach, with particular attention to protecting the penalty area, solving defensive dilemmas and creating a clear sequence of decisions.

The course also looks at how the Game Model should influence the way we plan and design training sessions, moving from principles to performance.

Finally, we look at transitions — moments where chaos naturally enters the game — and how we can prepare players to adapt without losing our identity.
